Sony announced Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, its first smartphones with bezel-less design at Mobile World Congress 2018. The smartphones are a huge departure from Sony’s existing rectangular design with huge bezels surrounding the display.
The smartphones also bring improvements to Sony’s lineup, mainly in areas such as imaging, display and hardware. The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact support new Advanced Motion Eye camera that can record 4K HDR movie on a smartphone. It also supports super slow-motion video recording at 960fps in Full HD resolution. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium from last year and Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ launched yesterday can do this only in 720p resolution.
The Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact feature a 19-megapixel primary image sensor with support for features such as predictive capture with motion and smile detection, autofocus burst and predictive autofocus. Sony is also adding flexibility to its 3D Creator app with support for front-facing camera as well. With Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact, users can create their selfie in 3D and it can be shared directly on Facebook timeline. While the feature is not an Animoji or AR Emoji competitor, it is built along similar lines. Both the Xperia XZ2 phones come with a 5-megapixel selfie camera with Exmor lens and f/2.2 aperture.
The Xperia XZ2 features a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display while the XZ2 Compact gets a smaller 5-inch Full HD+ display. Both the models have thinner bezels surrounding the display, giving it a modern look and the displays support High Dynamic Range with Sony upscaling all content to near HDR for better quality playback. The new phones are powered by Qualcomm’s fastest Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and support for expandable memory via microSD card slot. The smartphone also gets support for faster LTE modem with gigabit download speeds.
The Xperia XZ2 also comes with a new feature called Dynamic Vibration System which makes the phone rumble along with media and games. Sony says it will make you feel your media and we are not sure what that necessarily means in real life. Since the Xperia XZ2 Compact uses a plastic back as opposed to glass on XZ2, it loses out on this feature.
The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact also feature rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and seem to placed right in the center of the device. Sony has almost lost out in the competitive smartphone market and these new devices are an attempt to stay relevant. Sony says these devices will hit retail shelves next month but there is no word on pricing.
The Xperia XZ2 also supports fast wireless charging and both the phones run Android 8.0 Oreo with little customization. The Xperia XZ2 will be available in black, silver, green and ash pink color while the Xperia XZ2 Compact will be available in black, silver, green and coral pink color. In terms of specifications alone, they don’t seem to be a match against Samsung’s updated Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The success of Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will boil down to its price. Here are our first impressions of the Sony Xperia XZ2!
